Prodtex selected DELMIA for testing and validating its aircraft assembly concepts

According to a recent Airbus study, air traffic is expected to double within the next 15 years. The increasing demand for more planes from airlines, combined with growing competition from countries like China and India, will force European aircraft manufacturers to enhance the efficiency of their manufacturing and assembly operations. This improvement is essential to meet the rising demands in a timely and cost-effective manner.

In response, a collaborative research and development project named LOCOMACHS (an acronym for LOw COst Manufacturing and Assembly of Composite and Hybrid Structures) was launched, involving 31 key European players in the aircraft industry.

Dassault Systèmes business partner Prodtex, one of the 31 companies participating in this research project, faced the challenge of enhancing the efficiency of the wingbox assembly process. This included optimizing the entire assembly line for aircraft wings to improve efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and safety. The goal was to achieve significant improvements in the production process without compromising on quality or safety.

To address these challenges, Prodtex selected the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, which includes DELMIA® for Digital Manufacturing and whose key features include virtual planning, simulation, and workload balancing. Prodtex capitalized on these available features to virtually plan and simulate the wing fixture and assembly line. Through detailed virtual simulations, the company could effectively test and validate its assembly concepts before physical implementation.

“Virtual simulation with DELMIA enabled us to prove our build concept, verify the assembly path of the parts in the factory, and more efficiently balance the workload between stations, thereby reducing overall lead times,” commented Peter Helgosson, Director (M.Sc), Production Technology, Prodtex.

The implementation of DELMIA for Digital Manufacturing brought numerous benefits to Prodtex and the LOCOMACHS project. Virtual simulations significantly reduced the time required for the shimming process and enhanced the overall cost-efficiency of assembling composite structural parts. Additionally, the solution improved human safety, ergonomics, and the feasibility of the assembly process.
